Another review just In for "On The Waiting List"...
DAVE SUTHERLAND On The Waiting List
Red Kite Records
By all accounts this is Dave's fourth studio album but the first to land on my doorstep. The very first thing that jumps straight out at you is the wonderful sound achieved on the recording.
Cranked up a bit on my studio monitors here it sounds terrific with clearly defined instrumentation and infused with a warmth that puts you right in the middle of the action. Lyrically Dave hits all the usual subjects love and all its many facets, along with the darker side of life with songs about drugs and drink, abuse and even life following a spell in prison.
I have no idea if these are written from a personal standpoint or not but for sure they do have a thoughtful insight. 'Dreams About Beautiful Girls' kicks things off, which is very strong. The strength continues throughout the ten songs contained herein. I particularly liked 'In The Cold Light Of The Morning', 'Rose In A Bottle', 'Coming Apart At The Seams' and the title track which draws the album to a close. In a sense I don't like just picking out a few tracks to highlight but that is the nature of the writing beast.
This is a good collection of songs however I really would be remiss were I not to point out that in actuality this is not a Blues album as such. Don't be put off by that last sentence, its more Americana, but well worth investigation.

Described as one of the blues’ great storytellers and troubadours, Eric Bibb was born in New York into a musical family. Purveying a beautifully realised and deftly accomplished, soulful and gospel infused, folk- blues, Eric has no problem melding a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle contemporary sensibility. As one critic wrote “Eric’s singing and versatile guitar playing fuses a variety of genres to become a New World Blues”.

Red Kite Records Press Release
'On The Waiting List’ is the fourth studio album from one of South London’s best kept secrets and one of the most, at least up to now, underrated singer songwriters in the UK, Dave Sutherland.
His first release on his new label, Red Kite Records, the new CD builds on the strong Americana-meets-South London feel of his last two albums, ‘Comfortable Junction’ from 1999 and the highly acclaimed ‘American Refrigerator’ from 2002. ‘On The Waiting List’ finds a fully matured artist in complete control of his melodic and lyrical powers. By turns, dark, humorous, witty and poignant, the album reveals Dave’s observations on issues such as the search for love, love gone wrong, domestic abuse, the vagaries of drink and drugs, and life after prison.
The album features the talents of long-standing friends from Dave’s live and studio work, Paul Furnace and Matt Percival, who provide guitar and bass respectively, while Toby Baron and Sweden’s Gunnar Frick, from Ray Davies’ touring band handle drums and percussion, and keyboards, pedal steel and accordion. Gunnar in particular brings some brilliant flourishes of colour to the album.
The album is another example of Red Kite’s ability to find the true sound and individual voice of the artists that they represent and record at their superb facility in the heart of rural Wales. The sound is clear, warm, organic and ‘real’, which puts the listener in the room with the musicians as they put the songs down. Slated for release in Spring 2008, ‘On The Waiting List’ will appeal to all lovers of style of classic Americana from artists such as John Prine, Steve Earle and John Hiatt.
"Sharp observations spliced to Folksy Americana"
"Fine Americana with a hint of folk"

"Classic Americana at home in South London"
